Its become quite pleasant in karachi. only if one is a. inside the house b. doesnt live in a lowlying area c.doesnt have to take the bus anywhere
For the first ten minutes of the first real monsoon downpour, we felt good. We enjoyed the poignant smell of the rain as it hits the dirt. we frolicked about in the garden. we made pakoras and savoured them amidst the 'tupp tupp' sounds of the rain. and then, came the power failures. and the traffic chaos. and the tales of people getting stuck on chundrigar road. and of peoples houses being submerged in water. and of electric shock. and the list goes on.
Karachi can only afford..lets say 1/10 inch rain. otherwise the roads turn into rivers and all hell breaks lose. especially for the people who cant afford generators and cars.I was at my mom's watching the kmc and kesc people (who did turn up because rumour has it, the prezzie's aunt lives nearby) up on ladders trying to cut down trunks of an overgrown tree that was tangled in the electric wires. (last night my parents said sparks were falling out of the electric pole, and ofcourse they had no electricity for 2 days)..so that is the story of monsoon rains in a city where there has never been smooth civic services for these rains that come every year. no arrangements made. again.
Being a romantic though, i did take a picture.
